Abstract:This article provides an account of how the meanings of modern Chinese architecture were constructed and reconstructed during different historical periods between 1861 and 1965. It identifies some blind spots in current modern Chinese architectural historiography and calls forth a re-imagination of modern architecture in the new context. It argues that despite the various contributions made by modern Chinese architectural historiography, many existing studies have not recognized the constructedness of architectural modernism and the limits of modern epistemology. It is time to reassess modernist architecture at a time when architectural practice has become increasingly diversified.
