Abstract:The Jardine Matheson Warehouse E in Tianjin is one of the earliest modern warehouses in Tianjin to adopt the flat slab system and serves as a typical representative of industrial heritage. Based on first-hand archival and field research, this study examines the concepts, materials, equipment, and components introduced into the warehouse within the context of global technological diffusion from the perspective of construction technology. It further analyzes the dilemmas and approaches of value preservation of the construction during the process of heritagization. This study indicates that the Jardine Matheson Warehouse was pioneering in terms of sanitation, ventilation, and lighting and had an influence on the standardization of the modern construction system in Tianjin. Assessing the architectural value of the relevant remains furnishes the basis for further conservation and utilization. The systematic survey and excavation of architectural construction information in Tianjin and throughout China needs to be intensified to provide more diversified evidence of the technological diffusion in the course of globalization and localization.
