Abstract:This paper investigates the planning idea of Wudadao (Five Roads Area), by means of translation and analysis of the Anderson Plan of the British Concession in Tianjin, 1918. Influenced by planning and construction of British Garden Suburbs, Garden City, Shanghai’s International Settlements and Tianjin Nine Concessions, it was the most successful garden suburb planning in early modern Tianjin. Interpretation from first-hand archives and comparative study benefit value assessment and authenticity explanation upon Wudadao. In East Asia, Wudadao is the biggest, the most integrally protected, and the earliest systematically designed modern garden suburb, the planning idea of which is also the most similar to that of the garden city, making it a potential world heritage site.
