Abstract:This paper confronted the glaring absence of political dimension in architectural discourse in China, particularly through the discussion of architectural education. In European culture, the existence and development of the political hinges on the‘polis’–its spatial embodiment; discussing political dimension from the field of architecture is thus rooted in its very origin. Consequentially, the perceptions of the role of architect in the West and East are very different, particularly manifested through architectural education. The paper took Architectural Association School of Architecture as the example, examining aspects of ideology, methodology, management and spatial organisation. At the end, it argued that architecture can and should go beyond mere space building and actively participate in reshaping social mechanism and ideology.
