Abstract:The theory of composition stemmed from the École des Beaux-Arts, and dominated China's architectural education in the 20th century. It maintains a long-term influence on the design methodology and aesthetical criterion till now. This paper outlines the development phases of composition in China, from imitation of the Western mode to adaptation to Chinese local conditions, from style-orientated aesthetics to coordination with modern design methodology, in order to reveal its indigenization in correlation with the social and political changes.
