Abstract:There is little consideration of ultimate consciousness in the discussion of the recognition of architectural heritage value. Based on the fundamental understanding of human building activities, this paper deliberates on how building can potentially bear the meta value of architectural heritage, encompassing the objectivity and materiality of spaces with a scale for stepping inside in specific environments, the intention and even the will of subjectivity, and the bridge between the two, namely human labor. The latter two essentially point to the existence and significance of human beings, who create the physical essence of architectural heritage and make value cognition and judgments. The historical value, scientific value, artistic value, social value, and cultural value of architectural heritage can only be derived from this meta value and belong to secondary values. The meta value that buildings may bear has a prerequisite, foundation, decisive, and even a certain kind of transcendence. Based on this, this paper examines the contemporary concept of architectural heritage conservation, points out several misconceptions in practice, as well as the limitation of the meta value.
