Abstract:In 2003, the research team of Tianjin University turned attention from the northern fort-type settlement to the Great Wall Fortress. The research in the following 20 years can be summarized as follows: it clarifies the stratified organization of the Great Wall fortress, reveals the stratified organization and spacing lines of various subsystems such as Fengchuan and Yizhuan, then reconstructs the planning strategy and original system pattern of the defense system of the Ming Great Wall from the perspective of architecture, to break the misconception that “the Great Wall is just a wall”; then with the help of the continuous three-dimensional data of the whole line of the Ming Great Wall, many unknown facilities, components and their underlying shape laws can be revealed through cross-regional statistics, which reflects the cross-support of macro and micro research. According to the above methods, we find that from the Ming Dynasty to the Han, Jin, Qing and other dynasties, from the macro structure to the micro facilities, more than 2,000 years apart, but echoes, reflecting the seamless inheritance of the national wisdom. The public display and dissemination of architectural heritage is as important as basic scientific research, but also a new challenge. Taking the opportunity of the Exhibition of Chinese Folk Houses, supported by the two Great Wall databases, we want to make the exhibition more intuitive and interactive by comprehensively using illustrations, multimedia and physical exhibits, and to introduce the complex giant system to the public in a more vivid and understandable way, which is a beneficial attempt to display the linear heritage system.
