Abstract:With the expansion of the concept, scope and value of cultural heritage, the importance of local industrial heritage has become increasingly prominent. Based on historical research, this study explores the unique vent designed by the Xu brothers, craftsmen in the construction of three silkworm breeding farms in Zhenjiang, to achieve environmental performance under the background of the introduction of silkworm breeding technology in modern China. The design originated from the collage of medical buildings, showing the local construction adaptation in the transplantation of modern technology. By analyzing the unique working mode of the craftsman between “architects-engineers-workers”, it reveals that the “local knowledge” and “freedom of construction” are the key to shaping the particularity of the heritage ontology. The study expands the “cognitive value” and “functional value” beyond the basic value of modern local industrial heritage, providing references for understanding and protecting heritage, as well as contemporary design practices.
