Abstract:Traditional vernacular dwellings meet the comfort needs of residents with the lowest cost. This article analyzes the climate characteristics of the temperate region and proposes the“climate adaptation archetype”of traditional dwellings based on the“archetype”theory. It analyzes 40 typical traditional vernacular dwellings in the temperate region and constructs a climate adaptation archetype map containing three types of traditional vernacular dwellings. The field survey of the dwellings proves that the climate adaptation archetype of traditional vernacular dwellings is the climate adaptation experience of local residents who have experienced the regional climate and evolved over a long period of time through“trial and error”, which is not only adapted to outdoor climate conditions, but also to the thermal comfort needs of human body. The new vernacular dwellings in the temperate region should be guided by the experience contained in the climate adaptation archetype of traditional vernacular dwellings, reduce the reliance on building equipment, and create a more comfortable indoor thermal environment at the level of the building itself.
