Abstract:Since there are a large number of poverty-stricken traditional dwellings in traditional villages of Yunnan and western China, it is of great difficulty to protect and develop them. In view of this, the author provides a fundamental opinion on the maintenance and renovation of them: to adapt a low-tech route to use local materials, building techniques and labors so as to reduce costs of construction. Based on this view, this paper elaborates an experiment of the maintenance and renovation of a Hani “mushroom” house in Azheke Village in Yuanyang County, Yunnan Province, addresses the reflections after the completion of the experiment, namely fundamental objectives of the exploration and follow-up works, concepts of sustainability, and replicable techniques, and discusses such hot issues as the roof form of “mushroom” and roof thatch.
