A Typical Example of International Architectural Exchange in the Early P.R.C: Historical Materials of Architectural Exchange between China and Poland (1953-1966)
Abstract:International architectural exchange was a critical part of the development of building industry of the P.R.C., and an examination of relevant historical materials is pertinent to deepening the research of modern Chinese architectural history since 1949. The architectural exchange between Poland and China began in 1953 and become quite frequent and productive in the subsequent years as manifested in investigation, lectures and exhibitions, covering many fields such as national architectural history, city planning, architectural education, architectural industrialization, construction machines, new structures, etc. The exchange between the two states contributed to the robust development of China’s architectural industry, which also offered a glimpse of the cutting edge development of the world architectural design and technologies. Based on various first hand materials, this paper sifts through the important events and figures in the bilateral architectural exchange between China and Poland from 1953 to 1966 to understand the general forms and procedures of architectural exchange amongst socialist states during the Cold War, with reflections on the impact of the exchange on the development of China’s building industry.
