Imitation, Construction, Tradition: Examining the Heritage Value of Wood Structure Imitation in Concrete Construction through the Main Hall of Yu Temple in Yu Mausoleum
Abstract:Reconstructed in 1933, the Main Hall of Yu Temple in Yu Mausoleum of Shaoxing is a “traditional wooden building” that is constructed entirely from concrete. It not only replicates faithfully the wooden structure within the beam frame system, but also incorporates precast concrete components to create dougong, tile roof, and ridge decorations, which are then adorned with color paintings carefully selected by local literati. This ingenious fusion seamlessly combines traditional architectural forms with innovative concrete construction techniques, while upholding the local tradition of worship for Yu through active involvement of local artisans during the construction process. From a perspective encompassing both construction and heritage values, this integration of traditional forms and new materials stems from an inherent desire to preserve and honor local history and context. A comprehensive analysis of this case reveals both the remarkable resilience and adaptable compatibility exhibited by traditional locally-built systems.
