Abstract:The built environment is a resultant presentation of the action process of material construction, and the historical examination of the action process of material construction is the core content of construction history research. After value assessment and screening, the built environment is included in the category of built heritage. Therefore, the relationship between resultant presentation of the built heritage, the construction history, and the value assessment are inseparable, and all the three are closely related to heritage protection and restoration projects. It is necessary to have in-depth discussions on them. This article takes the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Shanghai as an example to thoroughly examine its heritage status, analyzes its value assessment when applying for national key cultural relics protection units, excavates its construction history, and based on this, reassesses its value, and then reflects on its protection and restoration projects. The research aims to highlight the importance of construction history research in heritage value assessment and conservation and restoration projects based on a case study.
