Abstract:Based on the perception of built heritage, the article clarifies the difference between vernacular architecture, vernacular built environment and vernacular built heritage, and interprets that there is no clear boundary between traditional villages and ordinary or generic villages, and the historical monumentality and ordinariness of vernacular built environment are transforming into each other. The living evolution of tradition from the classical to the modern and the multiplicity of heritage values determine that the scope of vernacular heritage conservation is constantly expanding and the evaluation criteria are becoming more and more refined, rather than simply a trade-off between survival and abolition. Based on the value elaboration and translation of rural heritage, the concept of traditional village conservation should be explored, as well as the interpretation and expression of vernacularness in rural construction, so that the value (in a broad sense) survives and is continued. Thus the paper proposes the concepts and methods of total design based on historical environment, pattern language based on changes of the times, collage thinking based on overall architecture, and co-creation based on rural subjects
