Herald and Difficulty: The Change of Restoration Concepts in Historical Architecture Mapped by Two Repair Plans of Confucian Temple in Qufu in Modern China
Abstract：This study compares the difference between restoration schemes made by the Construction Bureau of Shandong Province in 1931 and by Liang Sicheng in 1935 respectively. The former follows traditional approaches, while the latter uses new technologies to make the historic building“keep in or restore to an original state”. It also discusses the different treatments of“original state”between the two, interprets the transformation within the changing context of urban construction, and compares them with other restoration methods at that time. It then leads to a debate about what is “original state”.
