The Confusion of Authenticity in Heritage Conservation in the Old City: Introspection into the Application of Central Axis of Beijing for World Heritage
Abstract:The Central Axis of Beijing is the fruit of the wisdom of traditional Chinese construction. With rich historical relics and cultural context since Yuan Dynasty, it has been a symbol of the ancient capital. In 2011, the Central Axis of Beijing was announced to apply for World Cultural Heritage, which incurred disputes among media, scholars and citizens. Based on the observation on the controversy aroused, the complexity of authenticity is revealed after explaining the concept of authenticity and its evolution in the field of heritage conservation in the old city. It is proposed that the definition of authenticity can not be segmented from its unique context and current status in terms of its particularity and diversity.
