Abstract:Since the 1930s, Chinese architectural scholars’ research on traditional gardens has been diverse and fruitful. They not only have brought traditional gardens into the vision of modern scholarship, but also constantly carried out design activities with an attachment to the traditional garden culture. This article looks at their research, and makes a comprehensive review on the research on garden history, garden aesthetics and art and garden making approaches, and their understanding of gardens through design practices, in order to reveal their changing notions about garden in different historical backgrounds. Their diversified explorations are still of positive significance to the research and practice of today’s garden and architecture.
