Abstract:Positivism is a powerful force in shaping the twentieth century architecture. This article traces the philosophical ideas that brought about the emergence of positivism. Beginning with Greece, it explains four views of numbers in Western philosophy through the centuries, and how Western architecture reflected these developments, culminating in the positivist outlook of twentieth century Modernism.
