Abstract:This article attempts to sort out the formation and characteristics of French architectural machine aesthetics in the historical and social context, as well as the incarnation in the works of contemporary French architects represented by Jean Nouvel. From the germination of rationalism in the enlightenment period to the development in the modernist period, as well as the critic of ideological changes after the World Wars, the exploration of machine aesthetics in architecture always occupied an important position in French architectural theory and practice. On the other hand, the Beaux-arts tradition provided the architecture with an Image Aesthetic and served as a balance to machine aesthetics. This dual dialectical relationship between machine aesthetics and image aesthetics resulted in Jean Nouvel's “Specific Architecture” a complementary characteristic of rationality and sensibility, and provided a solution to the question of diversity of contemporary architecture in globalization.
