Abstract:Axis is a common design method of Chinese traditional architecture and Western classical architecture. This paper makes a study on the campus architecture of T. P. Yang, and focuses on the use and formation of axis in the campus planning, as well as the symmetry of individual buildings. It shows that T. P. Yang tends to: (1) use cross axis to control and group layout in continuous campus; (2) use symmetrical or paired individual buildings, symmetrical or
paired open spaces to build axis, and based on the direction of axis choose corresponding form for appropriate orientation; (3) widely use the shapes of “T”, “U” and “工” in the early buildings to build their symmetry. The research findings will be of considerable value for the in-depth understanding T. P. Yang’s design method of architectural clusters and his design ideas.
