Abstract：This paper discusses the “spatial characters” of three “Taobao Villages” around Hangzhou city in northern Zhejiang province, and especially focuses on the evolution of “dwelling patterns”. It then analyzes a specific experience of Chinese contemporary “urbanization”, which also relates to the discursive construction of “modern housing” as a type of modern architecture. In conclusion, this paper attempts to reveal the ideological presumption of “modernity” and its theoretical debate.
