Abstract:Yangzhou is located at the confluence of the Grand Canal and Yangtze River, and the changes in the Yangtze River's shoreline, the canal system, and the influence of maritime trade have played a major role in the evolution of the pattern of Yangzhou ancient city. The changes of the Canal and Yangtze River's shoreline promoted the development of Yangzhou ancient city from a “single city” under “Lüli” system to a “multi-city” after “Fangshi” system. With the changes in the water environment of ancient Yangzhou and the prosperity of industrial and commercial trade, the layout of the ancient city of Yangzhou developed from the “口” shape in Qin-Sui-period, to the “吕” shape in Tang-Yuan period, and to the “明” shape during Ming and Qing periods, and also experienced a change in the city's growing direction from the “north-south vertical” in Tang and Yuan Dynasties to the “east-west horizontal” in Ming and Qing Dynasties. The urban function of the ancient Yangzhou City also evolved gradually from a closed defense one to an open trade one, and presented the “the river, the canal and the sea” characteristics of the evolution of the spatial pattern of Yangzhou ancient city.
