Abstract:The ancient city along the Silk Road was influenced by its own conditions and external factors. There are three modes of development and evolution: towns, ruins and villages. “Ancient city village” refers specifically to the village that evolved from the development of the ancient city. It neither experienced social and economic development as a town, nor became a wreckage with institutional changes, but gradually developed into a village based on the inhabitance of residents. This article looks at the ancient city villages along He’nan Road, one of the three main routes of Qinghai Road, and while guided with the heritage value (from value recognition to value bearing), explores the evolution characteristics of spatial pattern from ancient city to village under the background of social development and functional transformation. It particularly analyzes the structural evolution that reflects historical changes, the cultural space that reflects intangible cultural heritage, the defensive space that reflects military value, and the landscape pattern that reflects artistic value. It also explores the spatial pattern genes to reshape the value of ancient villages and provides new ideas for the protection and development of cultural heritage.
