Abstract:Yu Garden is located in the Guangzhou Xinhepu Historical and Cultural District. Distinguished from other villas within the precinct, which are often clustered with symmetrical layouts and of relatively high building densities, Yu Garden is of a free layout and maintains an exceptionally low building density. This paper reconstructs the original appearance of Yu Garden and drawing upon the personal experiences of its founder, Wu Jingying, conducts a meticulous comparative analysis between Yu Garden and the Zhongkai Gunboat. It reveals numerous similarities between the two entities in terms of spatial layout and circulation patterns. By retracing the walking experience aboard the gunboat and referencing its visual impact, the study systematically outlines the methodologies of the transformation from gunboat design to architectural design, then providing an initial indication of the value of the Yu Garden.
