Abstract:The deployment of low carbon design strategies in the conceptual design phase has significant influence on the ultimate building energy consumption and carbon emission performance. Taking an office building in Shanghai area as a reference building to conduct simulation, this paper analyzes and compares the low carbon potential of several passive and active design strategies (natural ventilation, day-lighting, shading, passive heating, photovoltaic power, wind power, green plantation) which are closely related to architectural morphology design. The result shows that photovoltaic has the highest potential of all, while natural ventilation is the best of passive strategies. The effect of passive heating and wind power is minimal. The finding offers architects reference on the selection of low carbon strategies in the conceptual design.
