Design Strategies in the Reconstruction and Redevelopment of Industrial Historical Buildings: A Case Study of the Reconstruction and Expansion of Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, The University of California
Abstract:Industrial historical buildings are important witnesses of the development process of industrial civilization of human society. Their reconstruction and redevelopment have become an important scientific topic for universal attention and practice in the global academic circles of architecture. This paper conducts analysis and summary of the design strategies of the reconstruction and redevelopment of the contemporary industrial historical buildings. With the case of the reconstruction and expansion project of Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, the University of California, this paper analyzes the systematic design strategies and practical operations of the reconstruction and expansion in such aspects as the classified renovation of building forms, the optimization of functional distribution and the molding of spatial atmosphere, so as to provide enlightenment to the reconstruction and redevelopment of Chinese industrial historical buildings.
