Abstract:The Jingmen Railway is one of the branch railways constructed under the supervision of Zhan Tianyou and completed simultaneously with the Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway. “A Railway Line & Four Mining Areas”, namely the four coal mines of Wangping, Datai, Muchengjian, and Qianjuntai along the Menda Line, once served as an important support for the industrial clusters in western Beijing. In order to inherit Zhan Tianyou’s spirit and the diverse values of railway heritage, protect and utilize the heritage of the Jingmen-Menda railway line, and restore its function as a link between the western mountainous areas and the central urban area of Beijing, this study is guided by the theory of heritage corridors and the Transportation Oriented Renewal (TOR) model, and focuses on the new functions of the Jingmen-Menda Railway in undertaking commuting and railway cultural tourism in western Beijing. Through research on the current situation of the relationship between people and land, industrial distribution, and resource characteristics along the line, four regeneration strategies are proposed: spatial matching of transportation, spatial matching and functional matching of cultural tourism, and the creation of spiritual totems, so as to activate the transformation of characteristic industries and the revitalization of rural areas in western Beijing.
