The Odyssey of Technology: A Study of the Architectural Crafts and Heritage Value of Houses of Construction Companies’ Operators around Shanghai and Ningbo
Abstract：The mobility of construction company operators was one of the driving forces for the dissemination of modern technology among different regions. Modern architectural technology was enabled to have a route to transfer into rural areas through these operators’ practices in the construction of their own countryside houses. This paper focuses on such practices, particularly their houses around Shanghai and Ningbo, to discuss the flow of modern construction technology and craftsmanship between urban and rural areas. Based on this discussion, this paper intends to emphasize the importance of preserving these houses as heritage, and the possibility of preserving technical “sample” as part of architectural heritage protection.
