Abstract:This paper exhibits formally, technically and constructively the exploratory character of the project “Bamboo Canopy”, about the possibilities of bamboo as a material for light construction. The work achieves a high level of structural slenderness and a sense of lightness spanned by bamboo under the woven gridshell structure. In the context given by reusing the abandoned stage, a long-lifespan outdoor stage canopy has been built, making a material traditionally used in Chinese culture associated with a structural solution that allows large spans with few points of support. The paper also addresses the willingness to articulate the field of relations between the actors involved: the university team and local artisans. This is reflected in the constructive nature of the resulting piece, in which a refined balance between structural form, architectural space and materiality can be perceived.
