Abstract:This paper investigates the characteristics of courtyard morphology of traditional Zhuangkuo in Hehuang area and its climate responsive strategies for cold proof, wind protection and solar heat gain through cases studies. The study then quantitatively evaluates the comprehensive influence of the proportions and dimensions of courtyard on solar radiation, ventilation and thermal comfort in the courtyard through computer simulation tools and verifies the validity of the climate responsiveness of the courtyard morphology. The design principles of courtyard morphology with optimized environmental performance could provide a reference for green building design in Northwest China.
