Abstract:The social and economic change of China and the West in the 16th century promoted the prosperity of civilian culture, which also promoted the change of social faith space. These changes were concentrated on the ancestral halls and churches. A comparative study of the two has important architectural value and ethical value. From the perspective of typology, the evolution process of the belief space of churches and ancestral halls has both similarities and differences. In terms of commonality, both show the tendency of civilianization, which makes the hierarchical space weaker and enhances the watching and performance function. In terms of differences, the new development of the spatial form of the church often weakens and dissolves its cross-shaped space prototype, while the evolution of the ancestral hall space generally supports and strengthens the“men-tang-qin”space prototype. In addition, Christianity and Confucianism have different attitudes towards architectural decoration. The former is full of contradictions, while the latter agrees with the enlightenment function of decoration.
