Abstract：Compact city is a kind of urban development mode based on efficient use of land and space, and“three-dimensional”is the key strategy to achieve compact city. First, this paper reviews and sorts out the existing studies on the evolution of urban spatial structure and the stereoscopic intensive development of compact cities. Second, it tries to differentiate the connotation characteristics and constraints of stereoscopic core elements such as traffic, architecture, green space ecology, economy, society and regulation, and puts forward the operation mechanism of multi-core elements’collaborative evolution under the compact city’s three-dimensional development. Meanwhile, this paper presents a three-dimensional construction strategy form the multi-scale levels of regions, cities and communities, trying to achieve a harmonious balance among society, economy and nature. Under the background of improving urbanization strategy in China, the corresponding study of compact and three-dimensional space is conducive to achieving healthy urban development and rational allocation of urban resources.
