Abstract：After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the form of rural settlements has been affected by the changes of macro-political and economic environments. Three obvious changes have taken place in the period of collectivization, the early stage of the Reform and Opening-up, and the new rural construction period. In the political context of national governance, the types, characteristics and social motivations of rural settlement spatial form of the above three stages are summarized. From the sociological perspective of design behavior, this paper analyzes the internal relationship among rural governance, rural space and design intervention in different historical periods, and then elaborates the enlightenment for the current design subject’s involvement in diversified rural constructions.
