Abstract:Housing is the most important building typology and has the highest proportion in the cities, but compared with Western countries, the life span of housing in China is relatively too short. One of the major reasons is the lack of urban housing longevity studies. This study will develop the long-lasting housing theory in the temporal and physical dimensions, such as obsolescence, structuralism, typology, open building, the current representative practices, and the adaptive responds for the post-industrial and information society transformation. The sustainable interrelation between human and the built environment will be the emphasis, including the issues of culture, regionalism and the uncertainties of user demands. This research can provide theoretical support and valuable reference for future urban housing design and construction in our country.
