Abstract:Germany has always been a pioneer and model in the field of housing construction. This article reviews Germany’s severe housing problems at the end of the 19th Century and its subsequent efforts to improve health and privacy. Taking the Ufeisensiedlung residential settlement in Berlin as an example, it analyzes the planning model of large settlements with the “zeitgeist” of that time, and discusses the continuation of the theme of “co-living” in contemporary Germany. Germany’s experience and ideas of transforming the ideal of “utopian” housing reform into reality, as well as the innovative spirit, are worthy of reference for China’s residential reform.
