Abstract:Many cases in history show that bridges are not only built to solve transportation problems, but also to satisfy people’s spatial experience and artistic enjoyment of the environment. Obviously, this understanding is different from the current general classification of bridge design as a simple municipal engineering project. This paper studies the pedestrian double bridge of the BeijingHangzhou Canal, which has been built in the revival design of the ancient town of Xushu Guan in Suzhou and expounds the design concept and strategy of the double bridge from the aspects of environment, structure and traveler’s behavior. It emphasizes the important role of sensory experience and behavior shaping in the design process.
