Abstract:As a connection and extension of fragmented urban space, underground passage provides a continuous pedestrian system when the space above the ground has to be segmented. In the meantime, it appears to be a new spatial carrier for social life, holding an increasing number of activities in the linear and almost completely sealed space. In the long evolvement from connecting adjacent space to the integration of diversified underground space, it creates numerous positive public spaces for the cities, and demonstrates obvious advantage for their three-dimensional development. This article investigates an underground pedestrian passage from an architecture perspective. It interprets its spatial properties of linear independence, explains the causes of its formation, spatial characteristics and usage mode, analyses its transformation from infrastructure to public space, and discusses the design problems and the possibility of improving the space quality as a new type of urban public space.
