Abstract:Infrastructure is not only the basic system and fundamental structure supporting contemporary urban operations, but also important driving power behind the evolution of urban morphology. Plaça de les Glòries Catalanes in Barcelona is one of important cases. As a key point in the Cerda’s grid, traffic infrastructures in the Plaza presented completely different morphological patterns in four historical stages, which profoundly affected and changed the urban space. The form of infrastructures in the first and second phases were simply based on traffic rationality, which had resulted in fragmented urban space. Renovation in the third stage condensed the Plaza into an important node of the city. In the fourth stage the Plaza opened itself and transferred into a humanized urban place. Development of the Plaza from “passage” to “node” and to “place” clearly reveals the close relationship between urban infrastructures and revolution of urban space and urban morphology.
