Abstract:Einstein’s Tomb (1980) by Lebbeus Woods and Cenotaph for Newton (1784) by ÉtienneLouis Boullée are both monumental architecture dedicated to significant figures in the history of human development. By reviewing these two designs from the perspective of architecture, this study indicates that architecture performs as both projection and contributor to the perception of space of different times. As a result, under the similar purpose as memorial and monument, the two cases respond to different views and understandings of ‘space’ and ‘development’. The design concept of Cenotaph for Newton could be attributed to enlightenment and modernism, while Einstein’s Tomb to relativity and postmodernism. At the same time, the fluidity of spatial perception is suggested by the two designs and the designers’ practice afterwards.
