The Chinese American Veterans Memorial Arch at Kim Lau Square New York is a monument dedicated to Chinese American pilot B. R. Kim Lau who sacrificed his life in the Asia-Pacific front line during the WWII. Chinese American architect Poy G. Lee applied the idea of Chinese memorial archway in the design of the Memorial Arch and incorporated elements of architecture, pattern, bilingual inscription, number characters and urban furniture into the monument, making the Memorial Arch a site exclusively for Chinese Americans to reflect their past and present, suffering and glory, as well as Chinese identity and national consciousness. This paper discusses the cultural conflict and adaptation when the Chinese-style monument was established overseas.
