Abstract:Circumambulation is an important ritual in Buddhism, and also the basis of spatial organization. Buddhist circumambulating space started from Stupa, then developed into two categories, pagoda and Buddhahall, with different forms in different sects. This paper extracts the archetype of circumambulating space in Buddhist architecture, and clarifies the processes of morphological evolution of the archetype. It summarizes the six typical models, as well as their patterns of development in Hinayana, Esoteric and Mahayana: simplicity, complexity and harmony. It discovers that different Dharma of Buddhist sects and their different rituals result in the spatial evolution. The paper indicates the primary status and evolutionary mechanism of the circumambulating space in the spatial organization of Buddhist architecture, and provides a new perspective based on dynamic circulation for the analysis or design of Buddhist architecture.
