Abstract:Different understanding from different subjects makes the rural construction a complex imagination with multiple expectation. This paper focuses on the red (clay) bricks as the main material and its crafts applied in the project of a rural canteen in Dingshu Town in the Yixing City. Through detailed analysis of the construction process, especially the perception and metaphor of material as well as the meanings of local crafts, it reviews the theoretical model, practical characteristics, normative values related to rural construction, as well as different representations from multiple identities. It argues that brick could act as a kind of medium in such works which would connect multiple issues of rural construction.
