Abstract:Scenario transformation in sports venue has been a universal challenge considering the different requirements of games/legacy mode. The operational and environmental objectives set by sports architectural planning promote the research and practice of technics such as structure, mechanics and construction methods applied to new as well as the existing venues. The programming of the pre-/postgame scenario transformations on the two supplementary spaces – coming from the design brief attached to the National Speed Skating Oval, the Auxiliary Hall and the temporary stand – had a decisive influence on the volume strategy that served as the starting point of the concept design. The programming of a variety of operational scenarios in the National Aquatics Center’s winter/summer season determines the research direction and design standard that allows for the realization of the Winter Olympic Games and long-term operations, as well as the technical system supporting the transformation of the scenario. The programming approach will consistently promote the development of design concepts and the research/application of technical systems, and will in turn push architectural programming and design to become more closely integrated.
