Abstract：Based on the diversified water environment of Hainan Island, this paper analyzes the spatial relationship between the traditional settlements and the distribution of water environment from the perspective of spatial evolution of settlements. The spatial layout of traditional settlements in Hainan Island is gradually stabilized after the evolution, which is settled around the water, in pursuit of the trail of water and according to the characteristics of the water environment. In the process of running in with the water environment for a long time, different regions and environments have formed settlement layout and spatial form adapting to the water environment, and derived a simple water culture that focuses on the adaptability of water environment, respects nature, seeks harmony between human and nature and expresses regional characteristics.
