Abstract：This study looks at Dagong Polder, the“First polder in Jiangnan”and treats polder landscape as a progress for the interaction between nature and culture. The study uses methods like historical maps, local records and spot investigations combined with RS and GIS technology. Based on the research of polder landscape’s development and changes, the study analyses three landscape characteristics, including natural environment, farmland irrigation and settlement system, and reveals Dagong Polder’s unique landscape features. With an integrated and hierarchical research approach, the study builds the“culture-nature”research method based on system coupling, continues and regenerates polder culture in Wanjiang Basin. Furthermore, the study tries to provide reference not only for urban planning and landscape design in Wanjiang Basin, but also for polder research in other areas.
