Cultural Clashes in “the Architecture of the Mass”: The Influences of Shopping Mall Development on the Transcultural Communication between Chinese Mainland and Hong Kong since Reform and Opening-up
Abstract:This paper investigates the influences of shopping mall development on the transcultural communication between Chinese mainland and Hong Kong since reform and opening-up. It points out that in the commercial dimension, shopping mall development promoted the flow of consumer culture from Hong Kong to the mainland; beyond the commercial dimension, shopping mall development facilitated the flow of modern architectural knowledge to the mainland, influenced the mainland’s understanding of overseas modernity, facilitated the official-level cultural communication between the mainland and Hong Kong, and raised and also tried to mediate the clashes between them in terms of cultural consciousness and lifestyle. It argues that the transcultural communication between the mainland and Hong Kong with shopping mall development as the medium was in essence the cultural clashes between them in multiple dimensions. Also, as “the architecture of the mass”, shopping mall development facilitated transcultural communication not only at the official level, but also in the mass’ daily life.
