Abstract：The reconstruction of architectural heritage has always been a subject of considerable controversy. This article sorts out five reconstruction stages in the world and discusses the connection between reconstruction and the core issues of heritage preservation through the analysis of important architectural heritage reconstruction practices and symbolic theoretical consensus in each period: rebuilding the identity, expressing of multiple values, proliferating the commercialization and world heritage branding, the relationship between the architectural heritage and new buildings, etc. In contemporary times, with the emergence of new issues such as urban renewal and the post-epidemic era, reconstruction has become an indispensable part of the overall strategy of sustainable development. In conclusion, the article explains the process of reconstruction from reasonableness to rationality, and compares the cultural origins of heritage reconstruction in the Chinese context, revealing the practical and theoretical significance that should be paid attention to.
