Abstract：Gerontechnology can enhance the mobility, environmental support and health of older people, and the residential environment is one of its key research areas. Matching ageing technology to the needs of older people is key to improving the applicability of technology and reducing technology avoidance. The concept of gerontechnology is introduced by reviewing the definition of the term and examining the technologyusing trends in the field of housing. The driven force, technical essentials, and practical machinations of gerontechnology in the housing domain are investigated based on the perspectives of policy, market and research. The specific strategies and practical outcomes of reaching a consensus on the value of needs in the front-end, applying needs acquisition tools in the process and implementing needs response assessment in the back-end in typical cases are analyzed. In the light of the opportunities and challenges faced by China, the European experience of building stakeholder networks, playing the role of older people's subjects and providing a pool of collaborative tools is concluded, with a view to providing recommendations for the application of gerontechnology in housing.
