Abstract: This paper calculates the road network density, the kernel density estimation of the transit station, and the degree of street space integration in the United States and Japan urban central rail stations. It then compares the similarities and differences of the TOD models’ compact development characteristics of the United States and Japan central rail station area in terms of land use, spatial form and transportation system, and studies the development mechanism of compact cities in the two countries. The study shows the US-Japan urban center TOD model is the same in land use and spatial morphology, the land status is mainly commercial and business, and maintains a certain scale of urban open space; the development intensity is relatively uniform in the old urban area, and in the new urban area, it gradually decreases from the center to the periphery. In terms of transportation, the public transportation of the United States and Japan has high synergies, and Japan has a better walking system. This article is of great value for studying the characteristics of the United States and Japan's urban central station area and exploring the quantitative research methods in it, and also provides a reference for China to develop the TOD mode and compact city under its national conditions.
