Abstract:This study introduces an improved Visibility Graph Analysis (VGA) method of Space Syntax to analyze the spatial disjunction between visibility and accessibility as well as to systematically investigate the characteristic perceptual experiences of garden space, such as “varying sceneries with changing viewpoints” and “seeing and being seen”. Instead of treating the spatial layout of garden as two independent systems, i.e. the eye-level map based on visibility and the knee-level map based on accessibility, the new method takes into account both visibility edges and accessibility edges of spatial configuration at the same time. The proposed new VGA method is then applied to a sample of case study to test the validity of the new tool. The empirical results of the case study show that the improved method and new measures can better capture the visible and invisible boundaries in movement, and the visual relationship between seeing and being seen, so much so that the characteristic patterns of visitor behavior like movement and way-finding can be better revealed by spatial analysis.
